"I began sculpting in metal in the late 1960's after returning from Vietnam. I have spent the last 30 years perfecting my art and the critical technical processes required to bring one of my sculptures into being. I work in mild and stainless steel. A sheet of metal is not a friendly medium. A work is created by a hooded and gloved being, with blinding light from torches, ear-piercing clamor from grinders and compressors and acrid smoke from burning metal." The light-refracting quality of my sculpture creates a pleasing kaleidoscopic effect of constantly changing colors and textures. The colors used in the sculptures are a process I have developed. To my knowledge I am the only metal artist using this method. It is my joy and my passion to create the elemental and harmonious shape and forms of nature from this chaos of creation." Jim Mattern
